It’s Kids’ Month!

Last year, at this time, I hosted Kids’ Month.

When Sherrie & I found this mural at a Community Center in Winnipeg, I knew there would be a second Kids’ Month.

What I love about this mural is that kids helped to paint it.

This year Kids’ Month will be more inclusive than just street art.

There will be poetry in combo with street art & original artwork by fellow bloggers. I’ve got some educational posts planned, in conjunction with street art.

I’ll be reblogging some reviews of Kids’ books & a special reblog about Puffins.

Today I bought a picture book for Michele Eastman’s “Picture Book Pass It On” drive.

I’ll be sending it through ground mail. It will be a small investment, that I believe will do a big good.

This is going to be one fun month!

Michele Eastman holds a “Picture Book Pass It On” drive every year. All Charities are not Created Equal! It’s easy enough to research & find the good guys. Here are a few I respect, after doing some research.

Canadian Big Brothers and Sisters scored 4 stars or an “A” rating from various groups.

President Obama & First Lady Michelle Obama launched Let Girls Learn.

A society free from sexual and other forms of exploitation against children and women. Anuradha Koirala, founder of Maiti Nepal was a CNN Hero in 2011. A visit to the site is only for the strong of heart.

Helps more than children, but they help a lot of children They have 4 star ratings, and one website gave World Vision Canada a “B”

Yes, and Canada has 2 official languages, French & English.

What’s your point?

My point is that during “Kids’ Month” we should educate!

In a lane off Wellesely is this very pretty, but wildly eroded mural.

I’ve never seen paint peeling like this before. It was literally hanging like curled and colorful Post-it notes across a 40 ft. wall.

Had I found this when it was fresh, it would have been a 3-part post. This is all that was left to take pics of. I considered taking a shot of the peeling paint, but alas, I couldn’t bare to be reminded of what I’d missed out on.

Abstraction in Five

I saw this colorful strip, as I was being driven somewhere.

When I returned on foot, I found 5 abstracts by the tracks.

The sidewalk was thin, the traffic heavy and fast. The sun reflected off the paint to blind me.

I didn’t get hit by a car, and in spite of sun blindness, I managed to capture all 5 panels.

I couldn’t get any further back, and the art was somewhat elevated.

Just feeling the traffic whizzing by made me dizzy.

At first it was all just a smear of colours. Then I saw Jimi Hendrix playing his guitar in the purple haze of heaven.

Now, I see other things, but it’s too, late to shoot the close ups.

You can see, in the pic below and other pics, the sun reflected in the painting.

The sun is so fabulous, I think it adds to my shots.

“Sun, sun, sun, here it comes”

I thought this face was a crab or some kind of sea creature, until I got home and looked at my pics.

I’m not sure what else I missed? If you see something, tell me!

This fabulous art experience was a mere 1 hour walk from my home, & 1 hour back.

Nothing gets me to walk further than the anticipation of finding street art.

Michelle Eastman Books. Michele hosts a Picture book drive, “Picture Book Pass It On” every year in March to collect picture books for children with incarcerated parents. She has started early this year on Michele Eastman Books on FaceBook

It is my glory to have received a guest submission from the artist, Mike Johnston.

The first 6 pieces of art shown in this article were all painted during the summer of 2016 in Winnipeg.

I asked Mike to tell me a bit about himself.

Mike: “Ive been a street artist in the city for 18 plus years, and have been tattooing for the past 12 years, dedicated to the craft. Now, I’m realizing I have more to accomplish with my art, and am hitting the streets hard with work and coming out of hibernation.”

I, for one, am thrilled Mike has come out of hibernation. His work is eye-catching, totally gorgeous and the details are mesmerizing.

I asked Mike about this very interesting work of art, shown in the above photo, and next 2 shots.

Mike: “The mural with the panels was a painting i put up at a recent art show. The blank spaces are the paintings that came from the installation.”

I love it!

Below, is Lester. This was one of the very first pieces of Street Art I ever encountered in Winnipeg. However, Lester was seriously obscured by industrial trash bins. Two years later, I returned, only to find a good portion of this amazing work had eroded due to the harsh Winnipeg Winters.

Phlegm in Toronto

How cool is this?

On a skyscraper near St. Clair and Yonge is …

… an 8 story tall piece by the internationally renown U.K. artist, Phlegm.

I had to walk a half block past the building it is painted on, marauder my way through a corporate towers’ garden & mud to find a spot where I could capture this masterpiece.

I shot fast, as I figured I might be asked to leave the private property.

This is the only real vantage point for amateur photographers, and therefore tourists to capture this wonder. So, I think whatever corporation owns the property should build a walkway for us. It’s just a thought.
