How cool is this?
On a skyscraper near St. Clair and Yonge is …
… an 8 story tall piece by the internationally renown U.K. artist, Phlegm.
I had to walk a half block past the building it is painted on, marauder my way through a corporate towers’ garden & mud to find a spot where I could capture this masterpiece.
I shot fast, as I figured I might be asked to leave the private property.
This is the only real vantage point for amateur photographers, and therefore tourists to capture this wonder. So, I think whatever corporation owns the property should build a walkway for us. It’s just a thought.

I squealed when I first saw it. I’m so thrilled with how Toronto keeps nurturing the Street Art movement. It was so great to see this work.
This is an amazing art, Resa. At first sight it looks a bit dull but certainly not by a closer look. On the contrary!! The gardens of Babylon ? 🙂

You’ve captured some great images of a mural that is really hard to photograph. It is difficult to get a scale of the mural but as you know it is huge! I’m impressed that you made such an intrepid effort to get the shots. I hope you feel suitably rewarded not only for the pictures but also spending a bit of time with one of Phlegms murals.
There is a great short video clip on his instagram page of him painting it and as the video zooms out you really get an idea of the size of the painting. Here is a link to the video although I don’t know how links to instagram work?
Notice how in the video the access platform he is on is swaying! When I last saw him I chatted to him this mural. He said it took two people to operate the platform so he had to have someone with him. However, every couple of days he had to find a new person to volunteer because the movement of the swaying platform made them ill. The mural was a mammoth undertaking and a real physical challenge. He also had to take motion sickness tablets to overcome the effects of the moving platform. He appears fearless and will tackle paintings on a scale that most of us couldn’t begin to contemplate! It must be a huge mental challenge to face a blank eight story wall knowing it is your canvas!
Its a real shame you didn’t get to meet him while he was painting in Toronto. I’m sure you would have enjoyed talking to him about his work and you might have been able to signpost him to some other local murals.
His instagram site tends to be where he posts his latest works and it is well worth following. I am a huge fan of his artwork. I have some of his early hand made comics and his book and whether on paper or on the side of an eight storey building his work is simply wonderful. I know that on the Toronto mural he has included local landmark buildings in the painting. He is very good at responding to the location of his work.

Thank you for complimenting my capturing of this masterpiece. I’m a 100% amateur photographer, but within that realm, I have learned something about capturing a mural or piece of street art.
Certainly, I would have loved to have met Phlegm. I had no idea about this mural, mostly because I had been working in Ottawa from April until the middle of July.
I was educated about him because of your blog, and your love for his work. I thought of you immediately when I realized we had a Phlegm in Toronto. Then I triple thought of you when I laid my eyes on it.
It is a joy to behold, and you are right, it was a wonder to be there and spend some time with what Phlegm left for us here in Toronto.
Thanks for the vid clip! I got dizzy just watching it, and it really drives home what a feat this mural is.
