Birds of Davenport

Or as I call them, Nick’s Birds.

After all, Nick painted them.

First up is the Black & White Warbler.

Then we have the Blue Jay.

White-breasted Nuthatch

As one can see in the header, the birds are painted in a curved semi amphitheatre seating area. It semi-surrounds the entrance to the Davenport Subway station. Hence The Birds of Davenport.

I also took the mural in sections. The first section features the first six birds; up to the Red Breasted Grosbeak. Above – Cedar Waxwing

Northern Flicker

Red Breasted Grosbeak

The 5 birds after the Grosbeak are:

The White-throated Sparrow

Scarlet Tanager

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

European Starling

Red-tailed Hawk

And the last 5

House Finch (personal love)

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet

A Turkey Vulture

Blackburnian Warbler

And finally, the Common Grackle.

    1. I agree, Dave! I quite mesmerized when I first saw it. Nick is a wonderful artist, with a penchant for drawing all Land and water wildlife, including insects.

  1. I give up….these works of art just keep astounding me. At least I recognised the bird in picture two (watching the baseball recently helped).
And i prefer this bird takeover than the one in Alfred Hitchcock’s film.

    1. Yes, the mural is a beauty. The Jays aren’t doing as well this year, but there’s still time.

Lol… I get a kick from the bird takeover. Thanks Tyeth!

  2. What a stunning mural to greet commuters and those passing by! It’s so colorful. Hard to pick a favorite, but I like that the white-throated sparrow seems to be caught in song, and the red-tailed hawk in flight. They’re all birds we have around here, too.

    1. I was enamoured by the bird caught in song as well.
Yes, what a great place to come and go from.

I love when you post pics of the birds by the river. Merril, it is just sublime where you walk.

I wish my corner would get beautified.
Nonetheless, it is only a 2 minute walk across the foot bridge over a slew of railway tracks, a freeway and a highway to the lake.

For some reason there is not a lot of wildlife down there. Mostly geese and the odd duck, I used to see a lot of sea gulls, Monarchs and some swans…. but something happened.

      1. To be honest, you only see what’s in the photos. There is the not so sublime here, too!

Perhaps with all the geese, the lake can’t support the other birds. Do you have the Merlin bird app? You can use it to identify birds in your area. I bet there are more than you think, though it is more difficult to hear them in urban areas–or here when planes fly by.

        1. That’s cool. I adore pigeons.

No… never heard of the Merlin Bird App. Will check it out. Thanks Merril!
          Yes… interesting.
We have an Island Airport, just off the city’s core & lake’s shore. It is a 90 second ferry ride.
A downtown airport, it used to be barely used, but now it’s wildly busy. (last decade)
Just another thing helping displace wildlife.

    1. Thanks Aladin! Nick is a terrific nature artist, and it’s a joy to share his work.
Yes, I learned a lot of bird names from this mural.
      Art teaches in manyt ways.

  4. This is a truly remarkable mural, Resa. I heartily applaud Nick on his accuracy in colors, shapes and species. Painting these on a curve cannot be too easy, either. And your photos do a great job of presenting this kaleidoscope of colors and birds including species names. Wonderful!

    1. Thank you so much, Jet!

Yes, Nick is an ardent and exacting painter of wildlife. His fish, insects and domestic animals are also done in perfect detail, even when he has fun like when he did a blueish bull, or red and green lions.

      So happy you saw this!

  5. Gorgeous! The finch comes to drink at my water bowl daily. Perfect rendering of it’s bossiness! We have a parade to welcome back the turkey vultures in March. But, thanks to you and Nick I can now see a greater variety of colorful birds.

  6. It’s wonderful that these are actual birds, accurately as well as artistically portrayed.

I see house finches here when I have the bird feeder out in winter, and hear them singing in spring. They have a lovely song.

  7. May the cheer of the rest of the crowd uplift and cleanse the pallet after my sad comment. But I had to bury a Northern Flicker last weekend that had hit a clean window at my parents house. I was sad… So through this mural and Resa’s photos we honor your buddy! 🎨🪽🐦‍🔥

  8. Such a wonderful series of wall art , Mr. sweet man is a fantastic artist, I love all the birds ( I’m in a bird loving mood , a mourning dove made her nest on my balcony and now has two chicks in there. ). I’m captivated by the beautiful Blue Jay. Every one is amazingly beautiful! Thank you, Resa

    1. Thank you John!
Yes, Nick is amazing talented, and schooled in the study of what he paints.
It is a great compliment to know you appreciate my captures.

    1. That is true Rebecca! Lots of fun, art ed and healthy exercise all in one!

Hey, I had to take a pause (I will pick it up again, later)on the gown I was working on. It wasn’t happening… understandable as it was way out in unknown territory.

I’m on the one for you now, with that curtain I showed you awhile ago. OMG… she’s a beauty!

  9. Wow, wow, just wow! This mural would stop me dead in my tracks. Soooo beautiful, love all the colors. I’d love to visit this amphitheater. Thanks for all the details about the birds, Resa, I learn so much from this post!

Nick Sweetman is a phenomenal artis!! Thanks for sharing this!!

  10. Gaahhh, I was typing so fast. Pardon the typos…

I meant to say, I learned so much from this post… and Sweetman is a phenomenal artist!! Cheers! 🕊️

    1. Thanks Marie, I agree. Art in the streets creates beauty, and humanity benefits.
Nick is one of my fave street artists, but there are many I adore.

Lucky to live in Toronto, an art crazed city. ❦🎨❦

    1. Yes, I agree Ada! It’s such a joy to see this in the street. Art adds so much, and the birds are wonderful.
As a cat person, I would love a mural with all kinds of domestic cats!
I already have a few with big, wild cats. Lol

      ❦🎨❦xx

    1. I agree, Marc.
To see them decorating the cement city is a wonderful thing. As soon as the eyes rove pat this area, it is just more brick, mortar, cement and steel.
      MU🤩H

  11. Oh wow, such stunning work and so beautifully vivid. I loved them all, but would I be biased in saying I loved the Blue Jay most? 🤣🥰💜💚❌⭕

    1. YES! I knew someone would love the Blue Jay best.
It was a tie for me with the finch, but only because Nick painted such an hilarious expression on the finch.
      ❦🦢❦XOXOXO

  12. This is one of the -many- reasons, I (we) love street art.

Those birds bring colour to an anotherwise drab -grey concrete- area and will stay the entire winter…

Thanks Resa for bringing colour to our world.

    🤗

    1. YES
You are so right, Brian, and you are most welcome!
I was out walking, looking today. Found a couple of minor pieces, but the best will be found during late summer and early fall.
      xo

      1. Of course. I hadn’t thought of that. Not easy to paint a mural shoveling 5 ft of snow… 😉
And it’s also probably even more pleasant to go street art hunting.

  13. Resa, I’m feeling utterly bewildered that I missed this post… Granted it’s been a rough couple of weeks, but still… Anyhow, I love all these colorful birds. It’s a wonderful find. I enjoyed the blue pigeon and blue face on your next post tremendously too. Total fun. Hugs on the wing.

    1. Truly… hugs on the wing, Teagan!

Hey, no worries! I know it’s been a couple of odd weeks for you. If I didn’t hear from you, &/or if your comments were closed this weekend, I would write you!
      More Hugs!
