The Bluest Blues

A young Buddy Guy.

Wonder why his guitar looks like he’s playing left handed?

Dexter Gordon

Donnie Walsh from “Downchild Blues Band” on harmonica.

Background ghost musicians.

This amazing mural is on Grossman’s Tavern in Toronto.

Grossman’s is almost kitty corner from the El Mocambo, made famous by The Rolling Stones in 1977.

Grossman’s – since 1943.

I lived 1 block up the street, for 15 years. Many stories, but that’s for when I get a porch & a rocking chair.

On a Weekend Concert

Boogapony and GLAM Promotions is thrilled to present:

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the aFa Weekend Concert Series!

I’m Frank, your host. You can currently find me strolling the beach with provoking thoughts at Beach Walk Reflections. In my prior blog life, I hosted A Frank Angle for over 11 years.

Music was an important part of aFa life. I hosted 8 musicals of 81 different acts/themes – plus 23 in the Weekend Concert Series. I won’t even attempt to guess how many songs appeared in those posts. Because Resa loved the music at aFa, she invited me to resurrect the series at this beautiful concert hall in Toronto – The Glam.

Before the show starts, one important note. Make sure you follow The Producer’s guidelines below.

Ladies and gentlemen from around the world. Courtesy of Boogapony and Glam Promotions, give a loud welcome to the Bee Gees with Lonely Nights!

The Host’s Choice

The Producer’s Guidelines

  • No duplicate songs
  • In Comments: Include the song title in your introduction text so others can see it
  • One song per person on Day 1, unlimited on Day 2
  • To prevent browsers crashing from loading too many videos, please paste the URL as part of your last line (not a new line) – (I do not mind unembedding, so no  apologies are necessary)

Note: Return on Day 2 to submit more songs without limits. (My typical signal is posting a song for all attendees.)

BIG THANK YOU to DALE official Maître d’ of Weekend Concert Series

Kool Kats

Hello! I’m your vocalist for the evening, and I am in the Koolest band, ever!

As you can see, the Kool Kats has an upright bass, singer, keyboardist, trumpeter, drummer and accordionist.

Let’s have a hand for the band!

That’s our manager. Wish he’d quit smoking, but he thinks it’s kool, and he’s a kool kat, too!

The Band Played On

Although this mural s only 2 months old, it has been fouled with throw-ups.

Fortunately the t-ups are along the bottom, & I was still able to capture the best parts.

I’m working this mural right to left.

Below is a Pano shot, which shows some of the damage at the bottom. Any further back, and trees get in the way.

Vintage Toronto Music Scene

Oscar Peterson anchors this 22 story high mural in downtown Toronto.

This mural features the entertainers (Canadian & American) and the venues that were popular in Toronto’s yester-years.

It was impossible for me to capture images that are 22 stories high, but I made a stab at it. To the left, and above Oscar, we have B.B. King, who played a lot at The Colonial (a long gone fave spot for blues and jazz)

Shirley Matthews, an Ontario Performer, was a popular fixture at Club Bluenote.

Gordon Lightfoot was playing at Steeles Tavern when America discovered him. He moved on to Toronto’s prestigious Massey Hall after that!

By the 11th -12th story, Muddy Waters is looking somewhat muddy.

Jackie Shane, American in hiding for many years, has made a comeback to Toronto. We welcome her!

Above her is Dianne Brooks, Glenn Gould and Ronnie Hawkins. Besides my camera not having a telescopic lens, there were bare tree branches. By the blurry top,  it was all branches.

⭐ THANK YOU Ste J ! ⭐

There is no one I have ever met who loves books as much as Ste J, and I love that he finds a mural of writers when he finds a bookstore.

Click on the pic for a really great look at the authors!

Ste J writes:

“What could be better than browsing outside in the heat under the names of famous authors. If it is not enough to inspire, it also doubles as a reading list as well and if I may, I shall push you towards Italo Calvino and in particular Invisible Cities which is a wonderful book full of imagery and and magic.
