A Long Stemmed Rose for Holly

“The rose, a poem of nature” – Aunt Rose Comfort in Baby Doll by: Tennessee Williams

If the rose is a poem of nature, then Holly – House of Heart poems are naturally roses.

One day I found a single long stemmed rose taped to a wall.

I got excited, because I know giving someone a single rose holds meaning. I thought of Holly right away, because of her poetry, and all the fun we’ve had together.

Velvet Tango is an Art Gown I dedicated to Holly. The image of lovers doing the Tango, one with a rose in their mouth, was part of the inspiration for this Art Gown.

I made the gown black for its drama, and decorated it with red lace roses. Here’s a slideshow with more pics of this romantic & dynamic Art Gown!

Then came drawing the characters based on Holly, that we made up together.

It began with Boogapony Holly, a GoGo Dancer who “Ponies on down” in front of alley art. Then Princess Blue Holly, Rene Rosso & AGM Holly.

Above is RR in a net and roses gown. Below is a slideshow with a mere smattering of all the drawings of Holly characters I’ve had so much fun with.

I spent good time scouring books and internet for songs, poems, sayings or anything about/or with roses. Everything was so dramatic! Hey, we’re having FUN here with all our Holly characters! Then it came to me. The Hollies!

Cool enough, all this drawing has lead to more characters and more drawing. I’ve even made some $$$ with my new found ability.

Thanks Holly!

The Artist:

Rose & Red Stag

In the beautiful, inspiring and fun Ossington alley running North from Queen West, every garage door, space in between and back of the building is painted.

R&Stag #1

I start with the IPhone panorama shot, rose centered, to minimize the effect of a giant red tag on the gorgeous rose. The Stag garage is on the rose’s left as you look at your screen.

R&Stag #2

This shot looks South to Queen W. Behind me, the miles of painted alleys run all the way to Bloor Street.

R&Stag #3

Yes, there are a lot of tags. In the summer, many artists will return to touch up their tagged pieces.

I searched what to call a male deer. It said “Buck” for North America, and “Stag” for Europe, especially when referring to the Red Deer.

Amy Pinkrose popped into my mind when I saw the rose. Her flowers are beauties that spring from the dark earth. This rose is a flower that has sprung forth from the dark grey of dirt and garbage in a very urban alley.

Rose Reflection

Lousy taggers scribblers with no street cred, respect or chops have all but completely ruined this charming mural .

Rose #1

In the few weeks since I spotted it, all but 2 of the roses have been scribbled over. A credible tagger would tag around, beside or near the art, but not in the center’s of the mural’s focal pieces.

Rose #2

It’s a charming piece, and I have captured it the best I can without breaking your hearts the way mine was broken when I returned to photograph it.

Rose #4

I would have loved to include the steaming teapot, but again…..

This Pink Piece is on the S. Side of the N. Alley on Queen St. W. – W. of Ossington.

Pink #1

It’s wedged between other bits, pieces and tags.

Pink #2

It’s so cute, I must document it.

Pink #3

It has a skull and everything!

So Sweet, and…
