The Oscar Peterson Trio

I found and posted this mural of the Oscar Peterson Trio in 2013. Twenty people saw it.

I was listening to music on my fave music site OANNES. Socrates had posted some music by the great Oscar Peterson. I was thrilled to send him the link to this mural. I was wondering if he could suggest a piece by the Trio featuring Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Max Roach.

He responded back saying Max Roach was never in the Oscar Peterson Trio. Ed Thigpen was the drummer, not Max Roach. I did some searching.

Although Max Roach is portrayed in this mural as the drummer, Socrates is correct. I never actually doubted him. The crazy thing is that this mural was on a very well known Canadian music store chain, in Winnipeg. It does not exist anymore.

The building was torn down some years ago, and the mural did not survive despite attempts to keep it whole.

Here is an album cover with the real Oscar Peterson Trio. (Courtesy Creative Commons Licences)

In 1953  producer Norman Granz recorded: STAN GETZ, tenor sax / OSCAR PETERSON, piano / HERB ELLIS, guitar / RAY BROWN, bass / DIZZY GILLESPIE, trumpet & MAX ROACH, drums. The tracks were; EXACTLY LIKE YOU  & IT’S THE TALK OF THE TOWN

Read about it here on the The Jean-Pierre LeLoir Collection

You can buy the recordings. I didn’t, but I found other Oscar Peterson versions of the two brilliantly chill pieces of music.

HUGE thank you to OANNES!

Here’s a pic of me taken when I took those pics. Now my hair is grey. Time is a thief!

Poetess Jungle

First I gasped, at the beauty of the entire mural.

Then I singled out the face & said – It’s Holly, poet whose hair is “a tangle of stars”. Now she and her soft brown eyes are in a tangle of jungle.

If ever there was a mural as lovely as her poetry, this is it.

Love the tiger!

This detail, as well as the tiger’s stripes are painted in metallic gold and silver.

The shadows are painted on her face.

Some close up details.

Leonard Cohen recites words to a Joni Mitchell song. Herbie Hancock accompanies on piano.

It’s another kind of jungle: and deep in this jungle, in an alley, I found the jungle mural.

Sculpted Mural

Definitely not the prettiest mural I’ve ever found,

… but the most interesting technique.

The image is chipped, sculpted out.

Upon close examination, I see the original old brick wall.

There appears to be a thick layer of grey plaster, covered by a smooth, thin layer of off white plaster.

Not sure if the bits of colour are old layers of paint over the old brick, added at the end for effect or a combination of the two.

Once the image was sculpted out, a yellow sepia paint was added.

Makes me think of when I was a kid at school. We filled in an entire page of paper with a wild array of crayon colours.

Then we covered the colours with a thick layer of black crayon.

Then we made an image by scraping off the black, and leaving a design.

Murales de Montréal – Merci JMR

A Big Thank You to Jean Marc Robert for sending in these pics from Montreal!

“The first one (Woman in purple, some yellow in the background is at the intersection of Hope and Sussex street, a bit north of René Lévesques and east of Atwater.”

“The second one, woman and child on a bench overlooked by business suit man with robot head is I think….on St-Mathieu street between Tupper and Ste Catherine.”

“The third one, is quite beautiful.  I was told by a delivery man from UPS that it is quite recent. He notices & likes murals, and told me of the Leonard Cohen mural just north of this one. This is on Crescent street between Ste Catherine and de Maisonneuve.”

“I was on the sidewalk, and it was difficult to photograph. I did not notice the perspective in the mural. When shot, so we don’t see the alley, it was almost as though it was just another building. Ok not quite like that, but I thought it integrated well with the surrounding, not the same style but seems to be part of it.”

💞THANK YOU JMR! 💞

Leonard Cohen

Thank you to Jean Marc Robert – Art et Technique for sending me pics of this wonderful Leonard Cohen mural found in Montreal!

I have wanted this in my collection since the moment I laid eyes on a photo of it.

JMR also took pics of other art, which will be posted anon(ish).

JMR – “As for the one of Leonard Cohen, first I passed by without noticing it, being on the side of the street close to it, and it is up above surroundings. I guess if you look up you would see part of it. So I walked to de Maisonneuve street to see it and then come back to take pics on the other side, I did took also the Nick – Auf der Maur street sign, he was a long time city councillor. I think of the same area where lived Cohen, but not sure.”

I’m so thrilled, I just had to draw Boogapony Holly, as Suzanne. “She’s wearing rags and feathers from Salvation Army counters”

The Poetess

First mural hunt of the season, & I found this beauty. She has Holly’s soft brown eyes.

Whew! She is high up in the narrowest lane, although a compact drove through, very carefully.

Yeah, I stood on someone’s steps.  Also, there were a couple of discarded mattresses taking up space. Sprayed my NEW sneaks with bleach when I got home, just in case of bed bugs.

So, she has very long dark red hair, burgundy almost. Holly has lighter red hair. Still, I kept thinking of Holly.

She wears a beret. Makes me think of Beat poets and the Left Bank in Paris known for: jazz, the Latin quarter, and a long and historic string of writers, artists, and philosophers.

Then all these gorgeous flowers come in.

I see these as Holly’s luscious poems.

Poem after beautiful poem, just like Holly’s.
