Have Bags Will Travel – by: D.G. Kaye

She’s travelled the world and the 7 seas!

Written in memoir style, the author instills through her mostly hilarious adventures, how to adhere to travel restrictions.

As a pre 9/11 traveller, D.G. notes that one used to enjoy (“the thrill of the journey as much as the destination itself.”) Those golden days are long gone.

Times changed again, post Covid. We all know what inconveniences, feasibly horrors, can arise during travelling. Whether journeying by plane, boat or rail, one of the obvious issues is luggage.

From Toronto to Chicago to London to Las Vegas to Paris to Greece to the Caribbean to Venezuela and home again, D.G. has run the baggage gauntlet. (“Who opens a suitcase before it gets on the luggage belts and runs over it with some unknown vehicle?”)

Seems the only place D.G. hasn’t travelled, with suitcases and carry on, is back in time.

From the 2 books I’ve read by D.G. I know she is shopaholic, with a severe penchant for shoes. (“I carefully plot out which shoes and purses will match which clothes.” & “So what if I thought I might need to change my outfit 3 times a day?”)

I get it! I’m not wearing the same shoes I wore on the beach to the club at night.

There’s even a chapter in the book: Me, My Shoes, and I where the author wins a $500.00 slots prize in Vegas, and immediately heads off to buy a purse, (“along with four pairs of shoes I’d also been sad to leave behind after already purchasing four pairs”)

One of her strongest suggestions is to buy a luggage scale. There was an airport incident when heading out to a Caribbean cruise.

“It was only after that incident that I ……. invested in a portable luggage scale.” The incident? Well, you’ll just have to read the book to find that out.

This short book is a delightful read, where much travel advice exposes itself through the author’s memories. At the end, D.G. neatly sums up her essential tips. The final tip – Have Fun!

About the Author

D.G. Kaye is a Canadian author living in Toronto. She is a nonfiction writer of memoirs about her life experiences, matters of the heart, and women’s issues. Her positive outlook keeps her on track, allowing her to take on life’s challenges with a dose of humor and a mission to overcome adversity.

D.G. began writing when pen and paper became the tools to express her pent-up emotions during her turbulent childhood. She began journaling about her life at a young age and continued writing about the people and events that left imprints and lessons. She writes books to share her stories and inspiration.

D.G. is a big advocate for kindness and for empowering women. Her favorite saying is “For every kindness, there should be kindness in return. Wouldn’t that just make the world right?”

When she’s not writing, D.G. loves to read (self-help books and stories of triumph), cook (concocting new recipes, never to come out the same way twice), shop (only if it’s a great sale), play poker (when she gets the chance), and, most of all, travel.

        1. Speaking as someone who has like 40 pairs of boots and about the same in shoes but has learned to stop taking them in cases everywhere indeed to stop taking half the house anywhere, having one stasrred on an airport luggage belt, when a large orange juice carton burst in the hubby’s case, I’d squeezed it into….in my defence, we were going to be staying on a beach miles from anywhere . . . and brought the luggage belt grinding to ahalt for half the airport when instead of joining us on that beach, it burst .

                1. Sister G, I used to take every pair of shoes going to this particular Greek Island too. I could not walk along the beach to the taverna in any pair of them. So I used to take apair of flats for that and change when I got there…

            1. Well , your honour…..in those days, the girls were wee and you got taken straight from the hydrofoil by water taxi to this beach miles from anywhwere where we rented a villa. There was like maybe five houses there, dotted about the hillside and we had to carry the cases all the way along the beach and up the hill to get to ours. There was no road. We could buy bread and milk from the wee taverna and also they were great about picking things up in town for us, but the bus back to town to shop, came in at 11 am and obvi after travelling for over 24 hours, we did not really fancy rushing down the hillside and along the beach to catch that. Miss that bus and it didn’t come back till 3 pm when it picked up everyone from the beach. to take thme back to town. Also we’d ahve had to stay in town till that bus came back for 3, when the town shut down for siesta at 12….So yeah, I took stuff. . . . . Just to get started with. . . . . PUHEW..

              1. LOL!!!!
I find the defendant … crazy!
Just kidding, but Debby’s right, you got a book!
                ❦🌹❦❦🌹❦❦🌹❦

    1. Thank you, Marina!
Debby writes in a personal, inviting tone. It was a joy to read this book.
Her love of shoes is something I share.
Unfortunately once I discovered sneakers for work, it was hard to take them off.
Still, a beautiful shoe is a work of art!

      1. Lol Res, I agree, once I discovered sneakers for gym, they too were hard to take off, so of course had to have many of those too. LOL ❤

        1. I know! Sneaker crazies … and I just painted a pair of white Nikes with acrylics… abstract style to wear to the art gallery! ❦🌹❦

    1. Martha,
As a traveller yourself, I know you have already figured out many tips in this book.
Still, it’s a fun read, and DG’s love of shoes is contagious! xx

  1. HI Resa, this is a most entertaining post. Debby does write humour very well. She is the exact opposite from me as I hate shopping and put it off until it is essential. I also travel with a small suitcase and no high heeled shoes. I really enjoy reading about Debby’s antics with shoes and other accessories and I loved the shoe pictures in this post.

    1. Yes, Debby has the knack for entertaining, while making a point.
Ahh, the shoes, wish I could still run around in heels. Nonetheless, a beautiful pair of heels is a work of art I appreciate.

I totally enjoyed reading this book!

  2. Love this so much, Sorceress. What a fun way to review a book.

And I loved D.G.’s “Fifteen First Times” so will add this to my “To Read” pile, for sure!

    1. Thanks Thunder!
The 2 books of Debby’s I’ve read have been entertaining and fun. It’s like she’s in the room having coffee with me, chatting with me while I read.
      xoxoxo

    2. Hi Dale. Thank you so much for your comment and your interest in my books. And Resa surely did it justice with her wonderfully creative review too. 🙂

      1. She does the most I retesting reviews! I really enjoyed your “Fifteen First Times” and look forward to reading another 😊

  3. A fun post and great review. I’m with Robbie–I hate shopping, and when I did travel it wasn’t with high heels. 😊 The books sound very entertaining!

    1. The book is totally entertaining.
Debby would have made a fab team member in the costumes department in film.
Trying to find a great shopper is difficult…especially shoes and purses to go with outfits.
      Thanks for reading, Merril!

  4. Timothy Price's avatar Timothy Price

What a great collection of shoes. A luggage scale is a great suggestion. Sounds like a really fun book.

  5. I can imagine some of D. G.’s funny stories. The books sound hilarious and the cover with the bags makes me want to go somewhere. As for the shoes, I’m happy to be sitting down so my back didn’t start aching just seeing them. 😳😁😖. As art…amazing. As for wearing…a big “No thanks!!” 😘I enjoyed this post, Resa. Happy Sunday.

    1. I agree! The book cover is tempting.

It was fun doing up this post about DG’s book. It’s a fab read!

      Have a great week, Janet!

    1. Thanks so much Holly. Resa did an amazing job with her review. I’m happy to join your for a little shopping and a cruise! LOL. Hugs ❤

  6. LOVE this book review, Resa, and the innovative way that you showcased an exhibition of amazing shoes. Simply brilliant! Debby – your adventures are, without question, the best of the best. When you organize a travel tour, I will be there! And I’ll bring my fanciest shoes, along with my palazzo pants that Resa designed for me. Sending hugs to you both!!!!

    1. Lol Rebecca. Let’s go girl. You sound very ready to me. I’m always game for a trip. These days, it’s difficult to get anyone else to go! Hugs ❤

  7. What a fun post! This was the first book I read of Debby’s, and I just loved her sense of humor. Lot’s of great tips for travelers in the pages too, like the luggage scale. Her love of shoes also cracks me up (I only have 4 pairs), but I would absolutely have more if I could have ones like the photographs on this post. Wonderful fun, Resa, and congrats to Debby on the fun peek into her book.

    1. Thanks so much Diana for your lovely comments. I’m always happy when someone enjoys my antics, lol. And yes, I was loving the shoes Resa featured here too! Hugs ❤

    2. Diane, you are right! It’s a fun book.

Part of the energy is that Debby travelled in the good ol’ days. I did too, and so I feel her struggle to maintain the love of travelling, in spite of the glamour having been leeched out by the airlines. I have to ask, is the bus any less comfortable these days?

I’m thrilled you enjoyed the review!

        1. Train is fabulous.
Well, first class in Canada is anyway, and comparable to coach on a plane.
Plus, you get to see more of the country.
Of course trains don’t cross the ocean well. They tend to sink. 😬

  8. Another fabulous introduction to another great author! Thank you, Resa & D.G. Kaye! It must be fun to read that book. I have never been a shopaholic, especially for shoes, but I like that one with fish!!😉😂😘🤙

    1. Lol! Yes, the shoe of fish is a dish!
Aladin, Debbie is a riot. I love that she ran out and bought shoes after winning some $$$. To me, that is a passion!
      A fun book, 100%! 😉😂😘🤙

  9. Resa. Once again, you have outdone yourself with this wonderful review for my book. I loved the images you used to convey my weaknesses, lol. Yes, I’m bad, but better than I was. I look for 2 1/2 inch heels these days if I’m not in my comfy outlandish sneakers I wear to the gym and often many other places these days, lol. Hugs and love your way my friend for this wonderful telling. ❤ xoxo ❤

    1. Debby!

I am ecstatic that you love this review!

I so enjoy how you turn the pain and annoyances of travelling into antics. Honestly, I do miss the days of being able to run for the bus in stilettos.

It is my joy and pleasure to have read your book and done this review!

      HUGS!!!💖🌹xoxo

      1. What is not to love? Humor, honesty, and great shoes – no, not me, your review! Lolol. I am always stoked when you are ready to read another of my books. I know what I can look forward to for reviews! Hugs and more hugs!!! ❤ 💘🤩😜👩‍👩‍👧

        1. Hi Lauren. Thanks so much for your lovely comments. Resa’s creativity and picking out some interesting bits to showcase her images, makes it fun to read. I still wear heels, but much lower now, lol. Hugs ❤

  10. What a fun post and amazing review, Resa! Debby’s book sounds entertaining, and if it’s anything like the two I’ve read, I know I’ll love it. 🙂 The days of wearing high heels have passed, but your images are superb! Ane it’s too bad the days of traveling easier have passed too. 🙂 Congrats to Debby! ❤️👠🥰

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment, Cindy!

It was fun reading Debby’s book. She’s like a GF when you read her.

Ohhh… borrow some shoes… I misread. I thought you wanted to borrow some bunions!
      😂 lol…I jest!
Take care of your feet Cindy, and have a fab weekend! 💖🌹💖🌹
