Sherlock Holmes Walk

This cool mural running alongside the Toronto Reference Library begins at Yonge Street, where it very clearly announces Sherlock Holmes Walk.

However, having had entered from an alley, it’s presented how I saw it, backwards.

Brian Jiang

Various artists worked on this terrific mural, which is coated in a weather proof clear plastic/acrylic. It also makes tagging cleanable.

Unfortunately, it’s like shooting in a mirror, as you can see from the cement tile walk, car, buildings, windows, etc. in the shot. Holmes’ head, above these, is actually a close up where my body blocked all light. Find it in the second slide?

Melika Saeeda

I did what I could to minimize the reflections: shooting on a very cloudy day, closing the aperture amap, shooting on angles and mini touch ups in post.

Bernice Lum
Adrian Hayles

This is one of my 2 faves. It’s actually a lighter sepia, but without closing the aperture, it was also a lovely shot of the library’s windows and denizens.

Keitha Keeshig-Tobia Biizindam
Heidi Berton

My other Fave

Stunning in real life. As you can see, like shooting in a mirror. Yet, in real life, you don’t notice all the reflecting.

There were 2 more paintings by Poser and Old Hues, but they are very dark, and I just was not able to capture them decently.

    1. Thanks Matt … yes, I love it here, but life has been beyond hectic. I believe things are calming down now.
It sure is a wonderful colab mural, and I’m thrilled you got to see it.

  1. This art is fantastic, Resa! With apologies to Dr. Watson, the only other thing Sherlock Holmes Walk needs is to be near an…”elementary” school. 🙂

And thanks so much for the mention of Misty the cat and my blog! Very appreciated!

    1. OUCH! 😂
      Yes, an elementary observation, Dave.
It was a fun mural, and I kept thinking … Misty-ery. Funny how the cats of all my blog pals make an impression on me. I must be a cat lady.
      Welcome!

  2. Wow–this is a fabulous walk, Resa. I know you’re very concerned about the photo quality, but I think we still were able to savor the flavor of this wonderful mural-way. I was struck by the one by Melika Saeeda–though all of them are wonderful. I’m sure it’s different to see them up close and in person. What a wonderful project!

    1. Thank you, Merril!
Yes, Melika Saeeda’s piece is quite unique. I adore it.

I don’t blame the venues that host these larger murals for coating them. It makes sense, and I will always do my best taking the pics.

It really is a fab project. I’m so excited to see what gets done this summer. In the meantime, my photo files are bursting with art.

  3. Timothy Price's avatar Timothy Price

What a great walk. I love the Hound of the Baskervilles with Sherlock. All the artwork is fabulous, and your photos are superb.

    1. Thanks about the pics, Tim! I did my best.
It’s a fab mural and I was all a-tither when I found it.
I love the Hound of the Baskervilles with Sherlock, too! xx

  4. How very cool is this, Sorceress? Very. Guess I didn’t happen to walk near it when I was there in April.

Considering the situation, you managed more than well to capture these gorgeous works of art.

Only complaint is your choice of colour for the artists names under the pics. Very hard to read 😉

    xoxoxoxoxoxo

    1. It’s right downtown, near Yonge and Bloor.
Still downtown is not as seemingly large as it once felt. Online shopping has forced a lot of changes, which I’m watching here in real time.

Also…NOT HAPPY about what the city has turned Yonge and Dundas into. UCH/YUCK. “They” think we need to be a mini Times Square. We just need to be Canada.

      Complaint!!??! Whyyyyyoouuuu… ⚡️💥 just kidding.

Yes, the credits are faint. I don’t like making captions under pics, I find it clutters the post. BUT, I understand, and will make them darker next time.

      xoxoxo⚡️💥xoxoxo

      1. I guess in all my walking around, I just didn’t end up there!

Yeah, I don’t know why they feel the need to be anything like any other bloody country. Especially the U.S.

        Not a true complaint 😉

No, no, don’t change a thing! You do you. I can still see them.

        xoxoxo 🧚‍♀️🪄xoxoxo

        1. Did you get to see any art in you walking around?

If “he” did anything good fpr Canada, it’s make us embrace our own identity more fully.

          LOVE ya!
          xoxoxo⚡️💥xoxoxo

  5. Oh, simply splendiferous! Resa, thank you. I love the Sherlock stories, and most of the TV/movie versions too. It must have been a giggle-worthy delight to stumble upon these amazing murals. The London skyline as a crown is a brilliant idea. I love that I can see the street-life reflected in that one mural. To me, that makes it 100 times better. Big hugs.

    1. Agree, Sherlock Holmes is fab. Watson is a fun bonus.
It was more shriek giggle-worthy, as I cannot control my excitement when I find art.

Agree about the crown. EGR is one of the first street artists whose art I fell in love with, many years ago.

The reflections… well, yes, they are a lot of fun.
I am saving up pics for a post on just reflected art, or reflections in art. One day!
      HUGS!!

  6. Another amazing find and a brilliant collaboration by the artists involved. I too like the Hound images as I have a bit of a claim to fame because of Hound of the Baskervilles. When I was 8 years old I read that novel at school. It was also the centenary of the opening of my school so a reporter and photographer from the local newspaper visited and did an article. Well it was just my luck that the photo they used in print had me in it and the reporter noted the book I was reading with the quote “School celebrates 100th anniversary….but isn’t reading Hound of the Baskervilles a bit advanced for kids this age?” I’ve loved that tail ever since.

  7. Ok, that was fabulous. Loved all of it. The women in sepia are gorgeous and I liked the Sherlock movie with Robert Downy Jr. The murals are outstanding and you did a great job capturing them. ❤️

  8. Resa, these murals are extraordinary. What immediately struck me was how perfectly Sherlock Holmes belongs in mural form because Holmes himself is built from fragments, clues, shadows, observation, and interpretation. Even the reflections you mention almost seem appropriate to the subject. Nothing is ever entirely straightforward in a Sherlock Holmes mystery.

I was very interested in the technical challenge of photographing the mural. The reflections from the glass and surrounding city create an interesting effect where modern Toronto almost becomes layered into the artwork itself. It feels a little like Holmes existing between fiction and reality. And your favourite sepia-toned images are wonderful. It has that Victorian atmosphere that fits Holmes so beautifully, while still feeling contemporary because of the urban reflections woven through it.

    1. I agree! Now I want to watch one of the movies. Think I will after a few comments.

Love what you say about the creativity “from the glass and surrounding city”. I have been saving up art w/ reflections and art in reflections. One day I might do a post. I say might, as my photo files are bursting with art.

SO, are you home now? Did you have the best time? Will you be posting about it? Maybe you did today!

OMG! I had my art show while you were away. I posted it on Art Gowns.

      Missed you! HUGS!

  9. Some great art here, Resa. The part by Heidi Berton is especially intriguing. Definitely worth the trouble to take photos, despite the reflective surfaces. (Being tag-resistant is actually a good thing.)

    1. Thanks Audrey, and I agree… some fab art here.

Tag resistant is definitely good. It just makes it harder for me to share it, but in the end does not stop me.
      Nothing like a good challenge!

    1. It really is a wonderful work of art. The detail is fabulous. It’s Merril’s fave.

Honestly, first I like this one, then that one. However, that wolf is gorgeous, and I’m prone to animals and faces.

All in all a terrific mural.
Let me know when you are ready for another street art post! My files are bursting!
      xoxo

    1. Yes… the wolf! Love it!
I’m dying to go for an art walk, but I’ll have to wait a few days. It’s 85f here, and feels like 100f (35c).

Between what I have to do, and the weather there isn’t much walk and explore time.

OMG… in 1 month the AGO is hosting The Dallas Museum of Art’s Impressionist collection, which is apparently quite extensive.

      Aaarrrrooooo! xx

      1. That is hot for so early in the season. We had a fairly cool summer this year but I think the winter ahead will be cold. The exhibitions sounds nice. I look forward to hearing about it in die course.

    1. Ahh, you are a unique soul dear Meece.
No one else has picked that piece. Certainly it was near the bottom of my faves.

However, that’s the beauty of art. It speaks to us as individuals.
You are welcome, and I have so much art to share.
      xoxoxoxoxoxo

Ps: Have been watching Lennon videos, and taking screen shots, as I look for a new approach.

      1. That piece of art just struck me, it looks like a surreal earth. The colors are amazing. I loved so many but when I got here I thought “ wow”. I’m an odd ball for sure. Lolol! I’ve been browsing Lennon too. Karma just knocks me out. I setting a post once. They way he gets up and dances on the park “ stage”. You’re going to knock us all out with your portrait of this once in a lifetime talent.
        xoxoxoxox 🌎

        1. I thought the same, that it looked like an earth, not as it is now, but what it could be…in an artistic sense.

Just listened to Karma… love it so much. Now listening to “Jealous Guy. Wow!

I love when they have a close up of John’s face, superimposed over Yoko’s face. Amazing. I don’t think I’m that good, yet, but what a statement to draw.
          🌎 xoxoxoxoxoxo 🌎

                1. xoxoxoxoxo!!!
Just about to do a few John scratches on paper. My first since the show.
I’ve been warming up with Barbie gowns … They are for Dan’s door challenge.
Ohhh – maybe I can work a Sad Cafe poem in there
I’ll send you some. Let me know if you see one of your poems?
                  I’ll use it!! (or them)

                    1. Interesting…yes, that’s one way of putting it.
It’s quite interesting up here, too, because of Frump…aka the Big “F” – our tax $$$ is going to buy planes & drones & beef up our military to protect us from… the USA!

Never thought I’d see the day!

  10. Your ongoing efforts to share those mural arts are highly appreciated, dear Resa. Thank you, especially now, for showcasing these modern artworks created by the talented artists behind Doyle’s masterpiece. The title brings to mind a four-day trip to London in the mid-90s, when we strolled through the streets and encountered several Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts along the way!

    Well done! 💖🤗🌹

    1. Thank you, Aladin!
I am impressed with how many Sherlock Holmes fans are out there.

I am sure there are many enthusiasts in the UK. Doyle’s stories are still being made into very successful movies and TV shows.

IF – I had no responsibilities in life, I think all I would do is find art, go to the art gallery and museum, and share art.

Having said that, gotta run and do errands!
      💙🕊❦🕊💙xoxo

  11. Wow, these are wonderful, Resa! Such a mixture of creativity, styles, and colors. I love the Hound of the Baskervilles one, with the black, white, and red. It’s teeth are so forbidding and eye-catching! The one with the books and the skull really catch the eye, too, and the first that’s coated in weather-proof plastic is very cool. Thanks for sharing the Sherlock Holmes Walk with us!🎨🦋🌸🌷

    1. You are welcome, Ada!
Wish all there was to life was the arts, and sharing them, but …. a guy’s gotta eat, sleep, stay warm, etc.

This is a fun mural, for sure! Glad you got to see it.

Be well and stay safe! 💙🕊❦🕊💙

  12. Wow, this is spectacular Sherlocke art. That’s a huge sequence of art. How far does it run up Yonge Resa? At first glance, the once with the man with the city on his head looks like Columbo. LOL, remember – ‘just one more thing’. 😂💚🧡❌⭕

    1. It runs along the side of the library. It’s about 1/3 of a block long.
LOVE Columbo! I have a bunch recorded and watch them when I need to escape modern BS.

I have old Perry Mason’s on dvds, too.
      💚🧡❌⭕

  13. Just fab, Resa. My favourite (though I like most of them) is by Adrian Hayles. How he manages to give a ‘charcoal’ effect with sprays is amazing.

(The hound of the Baskerville is great too…) (See the curious incident of the dog at midnight. 😉)

Columbo now (Just read DGKaye’s comment)? Hmm. I wish I had some to escape the current BS indeed. Mexico is a terrible place for renting movies or series, lots of rights are blocked…)

Glad you’re back on the streets, we need more art.

    🙏🏻🌹

    1. I agree about Adrian’s work. Right off the top, this was my fave. It drew me in like an art magnet.

Definitely a brilliant mural all in all.

I’m telling you, those series are wonderful escapes… esp. when trying to fall asleep.
I have a collection of “go away effed up world movies”, also. There are some old Sherlock Holmes in there with Basil Rathbone.

Love the streets… well alleys. Yet, another escape.
OH, and the AGO is showing a big collection of Impressionist art starting in late June. That will be a good get away for a day.

      …and now… Ebola is back!
Think I’ll go watch one of my shows and draw!
      xoxo

      1. Basil Rathbone was one of the greatest Sherlocks. Definitely. I had to look up Nigel Bruce.
Impressionists in June? That is another great escape.
        Enjoy.
So you watch old shows again and again? I try to watch old movies on Apple TV, Bogart, Stewart, even John Wayne, but I’ve already watched most of their old catalogue… (There are many copyright issues with Mexico, which I find stupid…)
Enjoy and draw. (I have sketched anything in months. Hmmm.)
        Au revoir
        🤗

        1. Lol, yes, I am a repeat watcher.
AND when I am royally p’d off, I watch the Die Hard and Taken movies.
AND I am really peeved right now – I read “Nobody’s Girl”.
Interesting if Mexico is protecting copyrights then how is it handling AI. There is no bigger infringer than AI.
          DRAW!!!
          Bienvenue! ❦ 🕊~❦~🕊 ❦

        1. Yes… and now reflections!
“trees planted in front of the art” – I know! WTF? The stupidest thing, almost, I’ve ever seen.
          💙❦🕊❦💙

  14. Mama Luscious! This stroll might be an instant classic, as in, maybe even one of your top five- in my humblest of opinions- greatest art strolls of all time. Which is saying LOTS. But of course, with your brilliant eye and romantic meanders, it really is elementary my dear Resa.

    1. I agree, this mural is a fabulous art stroll.
I loved every moment of being there with it, and more than enjoy sharing it with everyone.

      LOL – MUAH! (also elementary!)

  15. Hi Resa!! I love the Sherlock Holmes murals, great shots!! And having just been back from Japan (which was an amazing trip), I LOVE the sepia art of the two Japanese ladies.

    1. Oh… welcome home!!!!!
I adore the sepia Japanese Ladies.
Did you take in a movie to review?
I’m sure we’ll have some mails about it.
      XOXOXO

Speak your art mind!
