Martin Luther King Jr.

“That old law about ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”

“The limitation of riots, moral questions aside, is that they cannot win and their participants know it. Hence, rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat. It involves an emotional catharsis, but it must be followed by a sense of futility.”

“The more there are riots, the more repressive action will take place, and the more we face the danger of a right-wing takeover and eventually a fascist society.

“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.”

“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.”

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

“Mankind must put and end to war or war will put an end to mankind.”

“Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

The Artists:

Not sure who painted MLK Jr. but the Zianna Oliphant art is signed:

“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”

    1. They are quite amazing portraits. I’ve watched the artists paint, and they just use a photo for reference. I used to think they projected images, because some of the murals can be very huge, but not. They just stand back every few strokes.

  1. Oh Sorceress! This is a wonderfully put together post. Parts of Dr. King’s speech with image after image… Fantastic. What would he say if he saw the crap going on today?

    1. Funny you should ask – what would he think?
I keep asking myself that question. Well, I found the art, and just had to do something a little special. Thunder, the USA could use an inspirational leader at this point!
      The world could use one.

      1. We are, exploring a little further, meeting lots of dogs on the big field near us still and keeping sane. Although this summer will be trying with its already horrible heat. I’ve no idea how I coped in the Philippines now. Best regards to you and yours.

    1. I was very excited when I found this art. MLK Jr.’s words are powerful. Seems real change is very slow.
Wish the pages on your calendar turned as slowly!

      1. They ought to be going the other way round… Change should happen faster and time should move slower!
        There’s still hope for the first… the second, I don’t know! 😘😉😘
        ❤❣❤😘🤗😘❤❣❤

  2. Excellent artwork, Resa. I don’t believe that an eye for an eye makes people blind, it evens the playing field. There have to be logical consequences and the meek are never going to inherit anything but the leftovers. Which is always a place to begin again, I guess. This place is brutal. Two different languages are being spoken. Peace and violence. It’s a war no one can win. Lovely post. Peace got him killed, like all the others. There has to be another way. Something we’re not seeing. Something in the middle. Think of Tibet and the non violent monks. What is their death accomplishing? They are dying for what they believe, like all the rest, but how does that help stop the violence? Something is wrong with just having two choices. Kind of like our political parties. Bad and worse. We need to see what’s missing, because peace and non-violence will never end the hate or destruction. It can work one person at a time, but not as a mass movement. Real hatred and violence is truly terrifying. I’ve seen it in the faces of the anti’s and there’s no reasoning with it. No sanity. They just hate and want you dead.

    1. Thanks Gi!
      It is fab art.
      Valid points made here.
What is a middle ground between peace and violence? Martians might be a better answer than any pragmatic idea I can conceive of.
I’ve always wondered why there are only 2 political parties in the USA?
If people are tearing down monuments… what about religious statues?
We are skiing downhill, and there’s a lot of trees.

  3. “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

    This.

  4. Thank you for your enthusiasm, your inclusivity and your belief that we need to connect and seek understanding. We live in a complex world – it is our time, our watch. “It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.” Aristotle

    1. Excellent Aristotle quote.

Yes, it is our time, our watch. I was quite moved to find these paintings. It’s crazy that MLK Jr. was killed 52 years ago. His words live on, as powerful as ever!

  5. You’re allowed out and about now? We’re sort of getting there. From 4th July the floodgates open and… we’re going to have a lot of frustrated English people hitting the pubs. I fear concepts of multiculturalism and being nice are about to go out of the window!

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised. People can’t control themselves after being cooped up, for so long.
I, on another hand, have embraced an hermitic life with art (not religion)
You couldn’t pay me to go to a pub, bar or restaurant!!!

          1. Piccadilly Gardens and “very lovely” unfortunately don’t go well together. This is Manchester. It’s very lovely if you want to get some drubs off a zombie knife wielding chav, though.

            1. Oh? Well, they show nice pics of it on Google. So, it sounds dangerous. The kind of place one takes their chainsaw for a friendly walk with their Marmite purchase?

              1. I typically walk through very quickly and head to the nicer bits of the city centre. Such as the Northern Quarter, where that birdo picture is. If you want to score some drugs, though, Picc Gardens is for you!

  6. Fantastic, important, and very moving post, dear Resa!
I think the Dalai Lama once said “Love is the absence of judgement”. Tall order,
but I find something to aim towards… I also love and resonate with all of MLK´s quotes
here. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Isn´t that so true? I have always had friends from all types of backgrounds and cultures and the one thing that I found important when relating to another is their HEART and kindness… Much love xoxo

  7. I have goosebumps, Resa! Amazing murals and profound quotes of a wonderful leader; a leader we should have in present time. Thank you for this. Everyone should see it. 💕
